This study aims to determine the opinions of primary school teacher candidates about their competencies on teaching Turkish language and the change in the opinions of primary school teacher candidates about their competencies on teaching Turkish language according to their gender, and high schools they graduated. The study is conducted with 240 senior students in the education year of 2010-2011 from Hacettepe University and Kastamonu University. The data is obtained from questionnaire and a semi structured interview form. According to the obtained data, the average of the opinions of primary school teacher candidates about their competencies on teaching Turkish language find themselves as “sufficient” in the field of teaching Turkish. There were significant differences between the primary school male and female teacher candidates’ opinions about their competencies on teaching Turkish Language in favor of the females. Also, there were significant differences between the primary school teacher candidates opinions about their competencies on teaching Turkish language and their high schools graduated, in favor of the students graduated from Teacher Training/ Anatolian Teacher Training High Schools. A meaningful relation was observed between the primary school teacher candidates’ opinions about their competencies on teaching Turkish Language and their academic success.
