Bodies in the shadow: effects of the social on the construction of the body

Even though "the body" became an academic research subject only recently, it has always been shaped by the body politics of social processes, and micro and macro power mechanisms. Accordingly, the increase in the number of gender studies, which head towards individualities and the problematization of gender itself rather than demanding social rights by combining contemporary ideas with feminist theory, has expanded the scope of the research on "the body". While the studies on subjects and individualities construct a language in terms of "the body", the effects of the social on individuals have also been reshaped within the context of this very language. This study aims to explore the effects of social politics specifically body politics on the formation process of the individual identities/subjects. How is the body shaped/formed by the societies? How is the sense/image of the body formed? What is the effect of power mechanisms to these processes? What funtions are the bodies, which are formed socially via education or tradition, given? In this study, social bodies are examined under three topics: dancing bodies, sportive bodies and ideal bodies. In the first two , body is predominantly an instrument of expression of the subject or the society while the third topic leads us to a much exclusive area. The questions that come into predominance in these topics are: does "the "dancing body‟" express the individual or the social? How does body politics effect "the "dancing body‟"? What are the functions of "the "sportive bodies‟" in social processes? What are the roles of the body and gender politics in the formation process of the body sense/image? What is an "ideal body‟, how is it formed, what functions does it have? This study intends to problematize not only the body politics but also gender politics and gendered bodies in terms of the body.

"Beden‟in akademik bir çalışma konusu olarak incelenmeye başlanması yakın bir tarihe denk düşse de, "beden" her zaman toplumsal süreçlerin, makro ve mikro iktidarların, günümüzdeki kavramsal söylemi ile beden politikalarının elinde şekillenmiştir. Gittikçe önem kazanan toplumsal cinsiyet çalışmalarının, çağdaş düşünce akımlarından da etkilenerek, toplumsal ve ekonomik hak taleplerinden bireyselliklere yönelmesi ve cinsiyet olgusunu sorunsallaştırması, beden üzerine gerçekleştirilen çalışmalara hız kazandırmıştır. Özneler ve bireylikler üzerine yapılan çalışmalar "beden‟ üzerinden bir dil oluştururken, toplumsalın birey üzerindeki etkileri de bu dil içinde yeniden şekillendirilmiştir. Bu çalışma da, bireysel kimliklerin/öznelerin oluşması aşamasında toplumsal politikaların (özellikle beden politikalarının) etkilerini incelemek amacını taşımaktadır. Çalışmanın genelinde "Bedenler toplumsal tarafından ne şekilde şekillendirilmektedir? Beden algısı nasıl oluşmakta ve bu algı nasıl muhafaza edilmektedir? Bu süreçte iktidar mekanizmalarının etkisi ne şekildedir? Toplumsal olarak eğitim, gelenek gibi süreçlerle inşa edilen bedenlere iktidar odakları tarafından hangi işlevler yüklenmiştir?" gibi sorulara yanıt aranmaktadır. Toplumsal bedenler olarak bahsedilen bu sosyal bedenler üç alt başlık altında irdelenmektedir. Bunlardan ikisi bedeni ifadesine enstrüman edinen dansçı ve sporcu bedenleri incelerken, sonuncusu da daha genel bir alana açılan ideal beden algısını irdelemektedir. Bu bölümlerin etrafında döndüğü sorular ise şu şekildedir: Dansçı bedeni, toplumsalın mı yoksa bireyselin mi bir ifadesidir? Dansçı bedeni, iktidar mekanizmaları tarafından uygulanan bu beden politikalarından nasıl etkilenmiştir? Sporcu bedenler, toplumsal süreçlerde ne şekilde işlevselleştirilmişlerdir? Bu beden algılarının oluşumunda cinsiyet ve beden politikalarının rolü nedir? İdeal beden algısı nasıl oluşturulmuştur ve toplumsal olarak nasıl bir işleve sahiptir? Bu çalışma, beden politikalarının yanısıra beden üzerinden geliştirilen bir dizge içerisinde cinsiyet politikalarını ve bu politikaların yarattığı cinsiyetlendirilmiş bedenleri de sorunsallaştırarak incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır.
